Ways to Bring Light to Your Deck

If you are in the process of adding a deck to your home, or have recently added a deck, you may be considering what lighting options you have. Adding lighting to your deck can help you enjoy it later into the evening, giving you more time outdoors enjoying your new space. But what lighting options do you have, besides traditional flood lights? Let’s look at some good lighting options you can incorporate into your deck that will not only be functional, but add to the overall ambiance of the deck.

Ways to Illuminate your New Deck

Ambient Light

If you are in the market for lighting that not only allows you to spend more time outside after dusk, but also lighting that will set the mood on your deck, string lights are a great solution. By hanging traditional or industrial style string lights above your deck, you can create a warm and inviting place to unwind. String lights are a fun and inexpensive way to dramatically change the look at feel of your deck in the evening.

In the event string lights aren’t your style but you want just a little bit of light to brighten up your deck, ground lighting is a great option. By adding lights to the outer edges of your deck and on stairs you can provide enough light that you can see where you are walking, but not so much that it feels too bright and unnatural in your new outdoor space. This type of lighting is especially important on stairs as it can be a great safety feature.

Functional Light

Flood lights on the house are an option for lighting your outdoor space, but they can be a bit too bright for simply relaxing on the deck. If you plan to play a lot of games, do a lot of reading, or other similar activities then something like a flood light may be a good fit. A better option, however, is some bright lighting attached to the house that can give off a good amount of light, but still look nice. There are many options available such as sconces in a wide variety of styles.

Fire Features

If you’d prefer to go the ambient lighting route, another great addition to things like string lights or ground lights is a fire feature. Whether you prefer a fire pit or a built in fireplace, adding a fire feature is a great way to add both warmth and light to your outdoor space. Having a heat source can also add to the amount of time you can enjoy your deck here in Maryland, making a perfect outdoor space in spring, summer, and fall.
