5 Questions to Ask Deck Contractors

If you’re thinking about adding a deck onto your home, your next thought may be, who should I work with? Adding a deck to your home can be exciting, but it can also be a bit of a difficult process, especially if you work with the wrong decking contractor. At Custom Deck Builders, we’ve worked with a lot of Maryland homeowners, and have helped them build their decks. We wanted to go over five questions you should be sure to ask your deck contractor.

5 Questions to Ask Deck Contractors

1. How Much Experience Do They Have?

When you have your deck built, you want it to last a long time, and the easiest way to ensure this is to work with an experienced deck builder in Maryland. The more experience a decking contractor has, the better. We recommend you sit down and have a discussion with them about all of the projects they’ve worked on over the years, how they’ve gone, and how they expect this experience to affect the construction of your deck.

2. Do You Have Any References or Testimonials?

If you’re trying to get an idea of how a deck contractor works with their clients, you should seek out some references, testimonials, or reviews. With these, you can hear straight from the horse’s, or customer’s, mouth, and can get a good idea of how working with them will be.

3. What Kinds of Materials Do You Use?

You want your new deck to last for many years, and the best way to do that is to have it constructed using only high quality building materials. Many amateur contractors will try to save themselves some money by using inferior materials, and while you may be able to save some money up front, in the long run these cheaper materials will degrade, which can lead to a safety hazard.

4. What Kind of Warranty Do You Offer?

Any Maryland deck building contractor that is worth their salt will back all of the work they do with a warranty. If they don’t have any warranty that they offer, and instead only have manufacturer warranties on the materials, you should be weary.

5. Are You Licensed and Insured?

If you have a contractor doing work on your property, you need to make sure they have all of the proper licenses, permits, and that they’re insured. You don’t want anything to go wrong, but need to be protected in case something does. We recommend you discuss, and possibly even ask to see, what insurance and licenses your contractor possesses.
